The IEC 62305 Rolling sphere method is a geometric technique used in lighting protection system ( LPS) design to identify unprotected areas on a structure. We design virtual roll a sphere with a radius corresponding to the LPS class over the structure, any part of the structure that the sphere touches is considered unprotected and needs an air termination.
This method accounts for potential lightning strikes on the solar ground mounted project or side of the building.
Designs are used to determine the placement of air terminals and down conductors it is a tailor-made product
How it works
- Define the protection level: Solar Ground mounted project with robotic cleaning wet or dry cleaning is determined. (R) radius of the rolling sphere and class indicated level of protection and a smaller sphere radius
- Roll the spheres: Technical team imagine a sphere of Radus ROLLING over the entire structure including the edges and corners
- Identify unprotected area : Anywhere the sphere encounters the structure surface is deemed an unprotected area
- Place air terminal: Aluminium air termination rod are places at contact points to intercept the lightning strike. The sphere rolling path helps designers ensure that side strikes are also protected especially of uneven surfaces or taller structures.
- Consider side strikes: the method is effective for structure up to a certain height or large solar parks around 40 m as it addresses the possibility of lighting striking the sides of the building rather than just the top or any areas left by the range of the sphere in solar ground mounted project
